The Medjool date is a pure local product, which took root in the Moroccan desert before spreading to the four corners of the world. In 1927, a Moroccan family emigrating to the United States took some Medjool shoots in their luggage to grow in California.

In the 1970s, shoots from Californian plantations were sent to Palestine and Israel where the climatic conditions are favorable for the cultivation of date palms.

In 1991, Morocco offered a dozen Medjool palms to Jordan, which have since been multiplied, and are a delight for farmers in the Jordan Valley. And more recently, in the 2000s, the global craze for Medjool prompted new countries such as Egypt and South Africa to plant it over large areas.
